reflection

I walk by store windows everyday and I always peer inside to see if there is anything new. Something pretty and shiny always catches my eye, making it hard to resist the temptation to buy it.

Looking through the glass, I always catch my reflection in the window. Sarah Rhoads wrote a post on self portraits last year that has made me think of pictures of myself in a different light. She pointed out that artists of all mediums have always created self portraits, not out of vanity, but to find a better grasp on their identities.

This might be something I will consciously try this year, maybe I will find something about myself that I never knew before.

  3. I've always had this nagging feeling it's a case of narcissism, since I take shots of myself as well. That's an interesting thought, thanks for sharing =)

  4. That is an interesting insight. While less romantic, the reason I have used myself as the subject or as a reference for a piece, be it a painting or an illustration, is simply convenience.

  5. I love this idea. I think I will make that a goal this year as well to capture a self portrait and discover something new.

  7. nowadays i'm a little uncomfortable with self portraits. When i was 18 i think i made tons of self portraits because i was afraid to ask other people to pose. I still like those pictures, and i'm glad i thought i was a good enough model myself :)

  10. I always feel silly taking shots of myself in the mirror or in a window, but why should I? What you say is true, these things say a lot about us.

  13. I like that idea about self-portraits. Too bad taking pictures of myself eventually becomes an analysis of all that I don't like about my appearance.
