My aunts brought us to pay our respects to my other grandfather and my great grandmother up in the mountains, not far away from the city. The sights truly blew me away.
My great grandmother rests in an older style cemetery where they all sit pretty close together and the headstones are all shaped this way. We asked someone to repaint the words on the stone as part of keeping her resting place clean.
This is one of my most favourite places we visited in Hong Kong. It was so peaceful there.
This is so special, Celine! My fave is your capture of the lady repainting the character on the tombstone, and the one of the paint and paint brush. So great! ;)
the use of space is so hong kong with all of the tombstones cascading down the hill. i hope that you'll post more beautiful pictures of your time there (although i know they will make me terribly homesick).
this is striking. i love the images of your grandparents also. you have a way with words as well as photos. respectful and sparse, while open and generous.
I remember visiting my great grandmother's grave in China, it looked something like this in the sense that all the tombstones were so clustered together and placed on hills that were pretty steep. I love that your photos are authentic yet they bring out the beauty of something that I did not at my time of visit believe to be beautiful (mostly due to the bugs and the climb). Thanks for posting these pictures, they make me nostalgic!
oh, celine. amazing.
