Eloise, reading

Happy New Year everyone!

While I am not one to make new years resolutions, I have a few points I'd like to follow this year. One of them is to keep reading (if not more) to Eloise. I read somewhere that reading to your child is the greatest gift you could give them but really, I think she is actually giving me a gift in return. I feel like I have spent the last decade staring at my computer but with Eloise around and her daily "Mommy, read it!" requests, it has forced me to spend less time on the computer and more time to snuggle in bed with Eloise and a pile of books, something I look forward to everyday now.

At the moment, these are her favourite books we read multiple times a day. Do you have suggestions for good books for an almost 2 year old?

Mog the Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr
Everybody Poops by Taro Gomi
I want my hat back by John Klassen
Stuck by Oliver Jeffers
Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

And now that photographing weddings are on a bit of a break, I may even walk away from the computer and curl up on the couch with a book when Eloise has gone to bed. Something I haven't done in....I cannot even remember how long.

  1. We're on the same page! I love children's books and because of M, I get to indulge myself! Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and Heads by Matthew Van Fleet are just a couple of our favourites!

  2. I always recommend board books for toddlers- easy for them to hold and turn the pages.
Some of our favourites for this age group are:
"Swing" - illustrations by Julie Morstad
    "Good Day" by Kevin Henkes
"Big Red Barn" - Margaret Wise Brown
Any of the seasonal books "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter" by Gerda Mueller ... these have no words but have lovely soft illustrations. You can "tell" the story, or ask her, "where is the lamb?" and have her point out the pictures. My 2 year old loves looking through these books on her own.
Another thing I love to do is make seasonal collections of books and keep them in a basket. Look for books all about Winter, and then switch them out as the next season comes.
Have fun reading! You're right, it is the best gift you can give your little ones. Have you checked out your local library for story times?

    1. Thank you for your suggestions! I need to rotate her books (and toys) to keep things interesting, and to make full use of what we have!
And story times at libraries is an excellent idea!

    1. My Chinese isn't so great but I teach her a few phrases here and there! My parents speak only in Chinese to her when they visit. I always tell Jin to speak more Korean to her because he is fluent!

  8. I have a 20 month old daughter and she loves books too. We really like Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, Virginia Wolf, If you Want to See a Whale and A Sick Day for Amos McGee right now. I'll have to take a look at some of the books you listed. I'm so happy to have found your blog, its lovely.
