canning, demystified

our grapes

homemade grape jelly!

homemade grape jelly!

I have wanted to learn how to preserve food by canning for a little while now. My first experience with canning was making cinnamon plum jam last year with Melinda (yum!), but I still haven't tried it on my own yet.

Last weekend, Melinda and her friend Jen, had me over to can 2 bushels of tomatoes! 2 bushels = 106 lbs of tomatoes, and we peeled and canned all of them! I will show you all the goodies we made when I go to pick up the jars next week!

After working on 2 bushels of tomatoes with friends, I was confident to try this on my own. A couple of days ago, I picked 4 lbs of
grapes from our backyard (they are ripe now!) and successfully made grape jelly! The outcome is such a beautiful shade of purple!

If the squirrels haven't gotten to all of them yet, I still have some grapes left. I hope to make grape juice with the remainder of our crop!
